Use the Sort Dialog (by selecting Sort from the View menu of the Search Results window) to change the order in which records are shown in the Match List. The right-hand list of this dialog shows the fields by which sorting will occur. If more than one field is listed, the first one is the primary sort key: Records are sorted first by the primary key; within groups of records having the same primary key, sorting is by the next key field, and so on.
Sorting may be in ascending (ASC) or descending (DESC) order. Alphabetic fields are sorted independent of case.
In the left-hand list are the fields not currently being used for sorting. To add a field (or fields) to the set of sort keys, select one or more fields in the left-hand list. Then click the > (ASC) or the > (DESC) button. The fields will be added to the bottom of the right-hand list.
You can reposition any item in the right-hand list by selecting it and using the up-arrow or down-arrow buttons to move it to a new position in the list.
You can change the sorting direction (ascending or descending) of any item in the right-hand list by selecting it and clicking on the ASC/DESC button. This will toggle the item to the opposite sort direction.
To remove one or more items from the right-hand list, select them and click on the left-arrow button (<). To remove all items from the right-hand list, click on the double-left-arrow button (<<). Removing all items from the list is useful if you want to set up a sort-order from scratch.
If you remove all sort keys and exit from the dialog, the Match List will be "randomly" ordered. (The order isn’t actually random, but it will typically not have any meaningful sort order.)
The sort order choices you make in this dialog will be remembered, even after you close the Search Results window whose sort order you were changing. The next time you do a search that creates a new Search Results window, the sort order will be whatever you last specified when you used the Sort Dialog.
Note: The sort order may utilize fields that are not being displayed in the Match List. Sorting is correctly done whether none, some, or all of the sort fields are being displayed. The currently-used sorting keys are displayed at the bottom of the Match List.
