Quick Start - Example 3

Example #3: Have any maps from the Mercator/Hondius/Jansson atlases been sold for under $100?

First re-set the Search Screen window by clicking on the Clear Fields button.

To find the answer to your question, you want to look for maps by either Mercator, Hondius or Jansson. To do this, you can type these three names into the first text-entry box (which already has Map-Maker selected as the field in the drop-down list to its right), but include the keyword OR between each name. Just to make this more interesting, suppose you are just a little unsure about the spelling of Jansson’s name (is it "Jansson" or "Janssen"?), and you don’t want to pause to look it up. You can use the wild-card feature to get around this. Type in the following search text:

mercator or hondius or jans*

The asterisk in jans* means that the program should search for any Map-Maker’s name that begins with the letters jans. (You could also have used the List button, to the right of the text-entry box, to find Jansson’s name and have the program put it into the text box for you.)

Note that the word OR didn’t need to be typed in upper-case; lower-case or works just fine.

In the Numeric Field Criteria section, on the line related to Price, enter 100 in the text field between the drop-down lists (that are already set to less than and US$, which are the settings we want).

Click on the Perform Search button. This search returns 347 matches, more than you expected. But glancing at the Map-Maker column in the Search Results window, you quickly notice that two Mercator categories are included: MERCATOR (FOLIO) and MERCATOR (SMALL). (You could look through the details for the Jansson and Hondius maps, and you would also notice that these include both miniature maps and folio maps.) You are really only interested in the folio atlas maps, so close the window and go back to the Search Screen.

Leave the previous search criteria in place. You will just add one refinement to your search request. In the Numeric Field Criteria section, in the Width line, change the drop-down list from less than to more than, and enter 40 in the text field to the right. (Folio maps are generally wider than 40 cm., while miniature maps from these map-makers are generally smaller. If you prefer to work in inches, switch the drop-down list to the right from CM to Inches and enter values in units of inches.) Again click on Perform Search. Now the list is down to 84 entries. You can use the techniques described in Example #2 to re-sort the list, perhaps by price, or by AMPR year, since inflation may lead you to expect these low prices only existed in the dim past. Actually, you will find some 1999 entries here, whose details you may want to examine for indications of problems with condition.

Conclusion

These three example have given you the basics needed to use the AMPR Electronic Edition. Experiment with other searches that are of interest to you. Remember that the on-line help provides complete documentation of the program’s capabilities. Just choose Table of Contents from the Help menu on either the Search Screen or the Search Results window.
