Question Can the ID# field contain letters?
hi,
Can the mandatory ID# field contain a mix of letters and numbers (no spaces)? Huh

I guess it depends on how the ID field maps to the key field in the database behind? Huh

RE: Can the ID# field contain letters?
The ID # field is, under the covers, a text field. So it can contain numbers, letters, spaces, or non-alphanumeric characters, just like any text field.

However, if you restrict your ID # field values to representations of simple numbers (without any fractional part), you will got some added help from the program:

1) The edit window will add an Assign next 'ID #" value button next to the ID # field, so that you can let the program automatically assign sequential ID # values as you enter new records.

2) If you sort by the ID # column, the program is smart enough to order the records numerically, rather than alphabetically. So you'll get records ordered like 1, 2, 3, etc. (rather than 1, 10, 11, etc.).

Both of these behaviors only occur if you have restricted yourself to numeric values for your ID # field. Recollector cuts you a little slack if you have some ID # field values that consist of a number followed by non-numeric characters. So, for example, if you had a set of related records that you want to use related ID # values for, you could number them 123a, 123b and 123c. In this case, Recollector will still consider the ID # field to be numeric, and you'll still get the two features described above. (Of course you would need to manually edit the ID # field when adding a new record, in order to get the appended non-numeric part, since the Assign next 'ID #" value button will not do this for you.)

RE: Can the ID# field contain letters?
I'm guessing this functionality is impossible when it comes to strictly letters in ID #?

RE: Can the ID# field contain letters?
The values in ID # fields can have only letters, if that's what you want. If you do this, you will just lose the capability of auto-generating the next ID # value when you are adding a new record, since that functionality only works when you restrict yourself to using numeric ID values.

If you plan to use jump-to links, you should be careful that all ID # values (whether alphabetic or numeric) are unique, since it is the ID # value that determines which record to jump to when you click the link. So if two records use the same ID # value, which one you will land on when you click a jump-to link is unpredictable.
