The Antique Map Price Record is now available in two formats: CD-ROM and USB flash drive.

Here are some notes to help you choose which format is best for you:

CD-ROM:

The CD-ROM version requires a CD-ROM drive on the machine where you are installing the program. However, if you install both the program and the data (which you are given a choice to do during the installation), then you do not need to use the CD-ROM once the installation is complete.

Because the CD-ROM cannot be written on, there is no danger of accidentally overwriting of deleting the files on the CD.

USB flash drive:

The USB flash drive requires a computer with an available USB port. The program can be run directly off of the flash drive, with no installation step required. You can, however, install the program to your hard disk if you so desire, in which case the USB flash drive does not need to be inserted in order to run the the Price Record.

The USB flash drive is writable, and, at 2GB, it has a lot of unused space on it that you are free to use. But because the flash drive is writable, there is also some risk that you might accidentally overwrite or delete the files on the drive which are needed to run the program. All the program and data files have been set to be "read-only", so you will, in general, be warned if you attempt to overwrite or delete any of the required files.

If you use the Map Collection Manager software, you have the option to store your collection data (and associated images) on the flash drive. This allows you to easily examine or work on your collection on more than one computer - simply move the flash drive from computer to computer.

Because a flash drive is more expensive to manufacture than a CD-ROM, the USB flash drive version costs $10 more than the CD-ROM version.
